About this worksheet

Each question names two everyday things, such as a cat and a horse or a feather and a brick, and asks which is heavier or which is lighter. The child circles the answer, so no spelling is needed.

Kindergartners compare weight by thinking about how something feels to lift. Questions switch between "heavier" and "lighter," and some pairs come back with the other word, so the child has to read each one.

A worked example

Which is lighter: a backpack or a pencil?

  1. Picture lifting a full backpack: it pulls your arms down.
  2. Picture lifting a pencil: it is easy to hold.
  3. The pencil is easier to lift, so it is lighter.
  4. Circle "pencil."

Answer: pencil

The common mistake

What it looks like: Circling the heavier thing when the question asks which is lighter.

Why it happens: The child answers the question they saw before. "A shoe or a sock" appears twice, once with each word.

How to fix it: Read the question word aloud first, "lighter," and underline it. Then ask which one would be easier to pick up.
