About this worksheet
Each shape on this page has 4 to 8 straight sides: a rhombus, a trapezoid, a pentagon, a hexagon and an octagon.
With more sides comes more to keep track of. Counting each side once, and stopping at the start, is careful one-to-one counting, the same skill a child uses to count a pile of objects.
A worked example
A pentagon. How many sides?
- Make a small tick on the top side and say "1."
- Move clockwise: "2, 3, 4, 5."
- The next side has your tick on it, so stop.
- Write 5 in the Sides box.
Answer: 5
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting 9 sides on an octagon, or 7 on a hexagon.
Why it happens: Without a starting point, a child goes around past the first side and counts it again, or skips one.
How to fix it: Make a light tick on the first side counted. When the pencil comes back to the tick, the count is done.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
