About this worksheet

A side is a straight edge of a shape. This page asks how many sides each shape has: a circle, an oval, a triangle, a square and a rectangle.

Counting sides is how a child learns why a triangle is a triangle. The circle and oval are a good puzzle too: they have no straight sides, so the answer is 0.

A worked example

A triangle. How many sides?

  1. Put a finger on one side and say "1."
  2. Move around the shape to the next side: "2."
  3. Keep going: "3." You are back where you started.
  4. Write 3 in the Sides box.

Answer: 3

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 1 for a circle, or counting one side of a square twice.

Why it happens: A circle's curved edge feels like one side, and going around a shape it is easy to lose track of where you began.

How to fix it: A side has to be straight, so a circle and an oval have 0. For other shapes, put a small dot on the first side before counting, and stop when you reach the dot again.
