About this worksheet
This page moves past the first shapes to a rhombus, a trapezoid, a pentagon, a hexagon and an octagon. Each comes with three names to choose from.
These shapes are named for their sides, so counting is the best way to tell them apart: five sides make a pentagon, six a hexagon, eight an octagon. A stop sign is a handy octagon to point out on the way home.
A worked example
A shape with 6 straight sides. A) hexagon B) square C) octagon
- Count the sides, touching each one once: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
- A square has 4 sides, so B is out.
- An octagon has 8 sides, so C is out.
- Six sides is a hexagon. Circle A.
Answer: A) hexagon
The common mistake
What it looks like: Mixing up the hexagon and the octagon.
Why it happens: Both are round-looking shapes with many sides, and a child may guess from the look instead of counting.
How to fix it: Count the sides with a pencil tip, starting at the top. Six is a hexagon (like a honeycomb cell), eight is an octagon (like a stop sign).
