About this worksheet

Every shape on this page has straight sides and 4 to 8 corners: a rhombus, a trapezoid, a pentagon, a hexagon and an octagon.

Counting corners carefully, one at a time with no repeats, is the same steady counting a child uses everywhere. It also prepares them to sort shapes by what they have in common.

A worked example

An octagon. How many corners?

  1. Put a dot by the top-left corner and say "1."
  2. Go around to the right, touching each corner: "2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8."
  3. The next corner has your dot, so stop.
  4. Write 8 in the Corners box.

Answer: 8

The common mistake

What it looks like: Counting the same corner twice on a shape with many corners.

Why it happens: On a hexagon or octagon the corners are close together and look alike, so the place where counting began is easy to lose.

How to fix it: Put a small dot by the first corner before counting, and stop when the finger reaches the dot again. Counting the sides afterward is a good check: the two numbers match.
