About this worksheet
The page shows photos of a penny, a nickel, a dime and a quarter, front and back. A small table at the top gives each coin's name and value: 1¢, 5¢, 10¢ and 25¢.
Size does not tell a coin's value: the dime is smaller than the nickel and worth more. Matching each coin to the table helps a child learn coins by their look and their name.
A worked example
A small silver coin with Franklin D. Roosevelt on the front and a torch on the back. How many cents?
- Look at the coin: it is silver and the smallest of the silver coins.
- Find the matching picture in the table: the dime.
- Read the value under it: 10¢.
- Write 10.
Answer: 10¢
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying the nickel is worth more than the dime because it is bigger.
Why it happens: Children reasonably expect a bigger coin to be worth more.
How to fix it: Use the table every time, and put a real nickel and dime side by side: "The little one is worth more." Words on the back help too: the dime says ONE DIME.
