About this worksheet
The page has all twelve hours, 1:00 to 12:00, each with an empty clock face. The child draws a long hand pointing to 12 and a short hand pointing to the hour.
Drawing the hands is reading a clock in reverse. A child who has to decide which hand is long and which is short learns what each one does.
A worked example
6:00
- The :00 means the long hand points to 12.
- Draw a long line from the center straight up to the 12.
- The 6 tells the hour, so the short hand points to 6.
- Draw a short line from the center down toward the 6.
Answer: Long hand to 12, short hand to 6.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Making both hands the same length, or drawing the long hand to the hour.
Why it happens: The child knows two lines go on the clock but not yet which job each one has.
How to fix it: Draw the long hand to 12 first on every clock, since it never changes on this page. Then draw a short hand that stops well before the numbers.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
