About this worksheet

Each penny on this page is labeled 1¢. The groups grow from 1 penny to 8, in rows of five, and the child writes how many cents in all.

Counting pennies is counting objects with a new name: each penny is one cent, so the number of pennies is the number of cents. Rows of five let a child see "five and two more" instead of counting each from one.

A worked example

Seven pennies: a row of 5 and 2 more below. How many cents?

  1. Count the top row: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  2. Keep counting on the bottom row: 6, 7.
  3. Each penny is 1 cent, so 7 pennies is 7 cents.
  4. Write 7 in the ¢ box.

Answer: 7¢

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 1 for every group, because each penny says 1¢.

Why it happens: The label on each coin is the number the child sees most, so they copy it.

How to fix it: Point out that 1¢ is what one penny is worth. Touch each penny and count aloud; the last number said is the total.
