About this worksheet
The graph at the top has six rows, one for each kind of shape, with 1 to 6 pictures in a row. Each question names one row, and the child counts its pictures and writes the number.
A picture graph shows how many of each kind there are. Counting one row at a time teaches a child to find the right row by its label before counting, which is the first step in reading any graph.
A worked example
How many hearts are there?
- Find the word Hearts on the left side of the graph.
- Follow that row to the right.
- Count each heart: 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Write 4 in the box.
Answer: 4
The common mistake
What it looks like: Counting the pictures in the row above or below the one asked for.
Why it happens: The rows sit close together, and a finger can slide to the next row partway through.
How to fix it: Lay a strip of paper or a ruler under the row being counted so only that row shows.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
