About this worksheet

Each question shows three boxes with stars, circles and squares scattered inside. The child counts each kind and colors one box per shape in its row of the graph, which has five boxes a row.

Making the graph shows a child where a picture graph's numbers come from. Scattered shapes are harder to count than a neat row, so this is careful counting too.

A worked example

Stars: 2 scattered stars. Circles: 5. Squares: 4. Color the graph.

  1. Count the stars, touching each one: 2. Color 2 boxes in the Stars row.
  2. Count the circles: 5. Color all 5 boxes in the Circles row.
  3. Count the squares: 4. Color 4 boxes in the Squares row.
  4. Check: the circles row is the longest, and there were the most circles.

Answer: Stars: 2 boxes. Circles: 5 boxes. Squares: 4 boxes.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Coloring boxes that do not start at the left, or leaving gaps between them.

Why it happens: The child colors the right number of boxes but scatters them along the row the way the shapes were scattered.

How to fix it: Always start in the first box beside the label and color boxes next to each other. Then the rows can be compared by length.
