About this worksheet
Each question has a graph with three rows (stars, circles and squares) and 1 to 5 pictures in each. The child checks the box beside the shape with the fewest and writes how many it has in the box to the left of the graph.
"Fewest" is a word many kindergartners are still learning. On a picture graph it means the shortest row, so the page connects the word to something a child can see.
A worked example
Stars: 4. Circles: 2. Squares: 1. Which has the fewest?
- Count each row: stars 4, circles 2, squares 1.
- Fewest means the smallest number: 1.
- 1 is the squares row, the shortest one.
- Check the box beside Squares, and write 1 in the box.
Answer: Squares checked, 1
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the shape with the most.
Why it happens: Children hear "most" far more often than "fewest," and may pick the longest row out of habit.
How to fix it: Before each question, say "fewest means the smallest number." Then point to the shortest row.
