About this worksheet
Each question shows an amount from 1¢ to 8¢ and ten pennies in two rows. The child circles just enough pennies to make the amount.
Counting out a number from a bigger group is harder than counting all of it: the child has to stop at the right number. That is how paying for something works, one coin at a time.
A worked example
6¢. Circle that many pennies.
- Read the amount: 6 cents.
- Start at the top-left penny and count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
- Keep going on the second row: 6. Stop.
- Draw a loop around those 6 pennies.
Answer: 6 pennies circled: the whole top row and one more.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Circling all ten pennies.
Why it happens: When every picture is the same, many children circle the whole group out of habit.
How to fix it: Say the amount first, then count with a finger and stop on that number. Hold the finger there while drawing the loop.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
