About this worksheet
Each of the 12 questions shows two gray bars, A and B, lined up at the same starting edge. The child circles the letter of the longer bar.
Because the bars start in the same place, a child can compare them by looking at where each one ends. Some pairs are far apart and some are close, so the child has to look carefully at the ends, which is the start of measuring.
A worked example
A is a bar that reaches almost across the space. B is a bar about half as long. Which is longer?
- Check that both bars start at the same edge.
- Look at the right end of each bar.
- Bar A reaches farther to the right.
- Circle A.
Answer: A
The common mistake
What it looks like: Choosing the wrong bar when the two are almost the same length.
Why it happens: When bars are close, a quick glance can't tell them apart, and the child may pick the one on top.
How to fix it: Lay a pencil straight up and down at the end of the shorter bar. The bar that pokes past the pencil is longer.
