About this worksheet

A 100 chart puts the numbers 1 to 100 in ten rows of ten. On this page every number is printed except the last one in each row, so the empty boxes run straight down the right side.

Those boxes hold the tens: 10, 20, 30, up to 100. Filling them shows a child where each new ten begins, and that the row after 29 starts with 31 because 30 closed the row before it. That pattern is what makes counting past 100 make sense later.

A worked example

The row reads 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, and then an empty box. What goes in the box?

  1. Read the row aloud: 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49.
  2. Ask what comes after 49: the next number is 50.
  3. Check the row below: it starts with 51, so 50 fits right before it.
  4. Write 50 in the empty box.

Answer: 50

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 410 after 49, or 40 instead of 50.

Why it happens: A child who knows the row is in the forties may write "forty-ten" as 4 and 10, or repeat the tens digit of the row they are in.

How to fix it: Point to the first box of the next row and read it: "51." The missing number sits between 49 and 51, so it is 50. Saying the whole column aloud, "10, 20, 30, 40, 50," helps too.
