About this worksheet

On this 100 chart the odd numbers are printed (1, 3, 5, and so on) and every second box is empty. A child writes the 50 missing numbers, which are the even numbers from 2 to 100.

Writing that many numbers in order is steady counting practice to 100. It also lets a child see the pattern in each column: the empty columns always end in 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0, which is the first step toward counting by twos.

A worked example

The row reads 31, ___, 33, ___, 35, ___, 37, ___, 39, ___. Fill in the blanks.

  1. Start at 31 and count one more: 32.
  2. After 33 comes 34; after 35 comes 36.
  3. After 37 comes 38; after 39 comes 40.
  4. Check: every number you wrote ends in 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0.

Answer: 32, 34, 36, 38, 40

The common mistake

What it looks like: Writing 30 after 39 to finish the row, instead of 40.

Why it happens: The row starts with 31, so the child keeps the 3 for the whole row and only changes the last digit.

How to fix it: Look one box down: the next row starts with 41. The number just before it is 40, which ends this row of thirties.
