About this worksheet

Each question shows one flat shape and two names. The shapes are the ones kindergartners meet first: a circle, an oval, a triangle, a square and a rectangle.

Saying the name out loud before choosing helps the word stick to the picture. Telling a circle from an oval, and a square from a rectangle, starts a child looking at what makes each shape what it is.

A worked example

A shape with 4 straight sides, two long and two short. A) circle B) rectangle

  1. Look at the shape: its sides are straight.
  2. A circle is round, so A is out.
  3. It has 4 sides, two long and two short, like a door.
  4. Say "rectangle" and circle B.

Answer: B) rectangle

The common mistake

What it looks like: Calling a rectangle a square, or an oval a circle.

Why it happens: The two shapes look alike, and many children call any box shape a square and any round shape a circle.

How to fix it: Trace the sides with a finger. If all four are the same length, it is a square; if two are longer, it is a rectangle. A circle is round the same all the way; an oval is stretched like an egg.
