About this worksheet
wh is two letters and one sound. In most American speech it says /w/, as in when and whip. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /wh/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: when, whip and whiz. A worked example
Read when on the last line.
- Find when on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /www/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /e/ (as in egg) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /nnn/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: when.

The common mistake
What it looks like: Trying to say the h: "w-huh-en".
Why it happens: The h is right there on the page, so children try to sound it.
How to fix it: Read wh like w. The two letters share one arrow because they make one sound.
