About this worksheet
qu is two letters that travel together and say /kw/: a /k/, with the lips rounding as it comes out. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /kw/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: quit and quiz. It's day 23 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read quiz on the last line.
- Find quiz on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Touch the dot and say /kw/ once, quick, straight into the next sound.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /i/ (as in igloo) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /zzz/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: quiz.
Answer: quiz
The common mistake
What it looks like: Reading q and u as two separate sounds, or leaving off the /w/ and saying "kiz".
Why it happens: Every letter so far has said its own sound, and qu is the first that doesn't.
How to fix it: Treat qu as one card. Say /kw/ as one quick sound, with the lips already rounded, then quit and quiz.
