About this worksheet
/y/ is the sound at the start of yes: the tongue rises high and glides into the vowel. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /y/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: yes, yet, yam and yum. It's day 20 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read yes on the last line.
- Find yes on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /yyy/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /e/ (as in egg) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /sss/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: yes.
Answer: yes
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying "why", the letter's name.
Why it happens: The name of y has no /y/ sound in it at all.
How to fix it: Say yes, yum and yet slowly and listen to the start of each. That first sound is the one on this page.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
