About this worksheet
/g/ is /k/ with the voice on, said at the back of the mouth, as in goat. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /g/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: pig, bag, dog and dig. It's day 17 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read dog on the last line.
- Find dog on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Touch the dot and say /d/ once, quick, straight into the next sound.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /o/ (as in octopus) without a break.
- Touch the last dot and say /g/, crisp, then stop.
- Say it again at talking speed: dog.
Answer: dog
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying "jee", the letter's name, or "guh".
Why it happens: The name of g starts with a /j/ sound, which isn't what g says in these words.
How to fix it: Gulp it: /g/ is a short sound from the back of the throat. Dog, dig, bag and pig all end on it.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
