About this worksheet
/h/ is only breath, like fogging up a window. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /h/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: hat, hen, hop and hug. It's day 18 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read hat on the last line.
- Find hat on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /hhh/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
- Touch the last dot and say /t/, crisp, then stop.
- Say it again at talking speed: hat.
Answer: hat
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying "huh" with a heavy voice, or the name, "aitch".
Why it happens: Breath alone doesn't feel like a sound, so children push a voice into it.
How to fix it: Breathe on a hand, then let the breath run straight into the vowel: /h/ /a/ becomes "ha". There's no gap and no extra voice.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
