About this worksheet

k says /k/, the same sound c made on the cat page: the back of the tongue lifts and lets go. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.

An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /k/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: kid, kit and keg. It's day 22 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.

A worked example

Read kit on the last line.

  1. Find kit on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
  2. Touch the dot and say /k/ once, quick, straight into the next sound.
  3. Slide along the arrow, holding /i/ (as in igloo) without a break.
  4. Touch the last dot and say /t/, crisp, then stop.
  5. Say it again at talking speed: kit.

Answer: kit

The common mistake

What it looks like: Thinking k must say a different sound from c.

Why it happens: Two letters for one sound is new, and children expect each letter to have its own.

How to fix it: Put kit and cat side by side and say them: the first sound is the same. Two letters can spell one sound, and this is the first time a child meets that.
