Letter X Sound: Stop and Blend

7 questions, one page, US Letter. Print it and do it on paper.

On the sheet: Put your finger on the dot to say the sound. These sounds stop — try not to add an “uh” or an “a” after it. Say each sound crisply, then blend it with a sound you can hold. Check the box when the line is done 3 times.

About this worksheet

x says two sounds at once, /ks/: a /k/ and a quick hiss, as at the end of box. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.

An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /ks/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: wax, box, fox and six. It's day 24 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.

A worked example

Read fox on the last line.

  1. Find fox on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
  2. Slide along the arrow, holding /fff/ without a break.
  3. Slide along the arrow, holding /o/ (as in octopus) without a break.
  4. Touch the last dot and say /ks/, crisp, then stop.
  5. Say it again at talking speed: fox.

Answer: fox

The common mistake

What it looks like: Saying "eks", the letter's name, which adds a vowel to the end of every word.

Why it happens: The name of x is almost right, which is what makes it hard to drop.

How to fix it: Say box slowly and listen to the end: /ks/. In most short words x sits at the end, like box, fox and six.
