About this worksheet
sh is two letters and one sound: the lips push forward for a long, quiet "shhh", like asking for quiet. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /sh/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: ship, shop, shut and fish. A worked example
Read ship on the last line.
- Find ship on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /shhh/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /i/ (as in igloo) without a break.
- Touch the last dot and say /p/, crisp, then stop.
- Say it again at talking speed: ship.
Answer: ship
The common mistake
What it looks like: Reading s and h as two sounds: "s-huh-ip".
Why it happens: Until now every letter on the page has said its own sound.
How to fix it: Put a finger to the lips and say "shhh". The s and the h sit under one arrow because they make one sound together.
