About this worksheet
th is two letters and one sound: the tongue peeks out between the teeth, with the voice on in this, that and then. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /th/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: that, this, them and then. It's day 26 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read this on the last line.
- Find this on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /thhh/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /i/ (as in igloo) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /sss/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: this.
Answer: this
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying /d/ or /f/ instead: "dis" for this, or "fink" for think.
Why it happens: /th/ is one of the last sounds many children can say, and /d/ and /f/ are close.
How to fix it: Use a mirror: the tongue tip should be just visible between the teeth. Hold it there and let the sound run.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
