About this worksheet
ph is two letters and one sound, /f/, as in phone. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /f/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: graph and phone. A worked example
Read graph on the last line.
- Find graph on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Touch the dot and say /g/ once, quick, straight into the next sound.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /rrr/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /fff/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: graph.
Answer: graph
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying /p/ and then /h/: "p-huh-one".
Why it happens: A child who knows p and h will read each of them.
How to fix it: Read ph as f. Phone and graph both use it; the sound is the same one as fan.
