About this worksheet

ck is two letters and one /k/ sound, and it comes at the end of a short word, as in duck. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.

An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /k/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: back, duck, sock and rock. It's day 29 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.

A worked example

Read duck on the last line.

  1. Find duck on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
  2. Touch the dot and say /d/ once, quick, straight into the next sound.
  3. Slide along the arrow, holding /u/ (as in up) without a break.
  4. Touch the last dot and say /k/, crisp, then stop.
  5. Say it again at talking speed: duck.

Answer: duck

The common mistake

What it looks like: Saying /k/ twice, once for c and once for k: "duk-k".

Why it happens: Both letters say /k/ on their own, so it looks like two sounds.

How to fix it: Tap the pair once. c and k together are one /k/, which is why they share one dot. Back, duck, sock and rock all end the same way.
