About this worksheet

CVC words are three-letter words made of a consonant, a short vowel and a consonant: sat, pig, hop. They are the first words most children read by sounding out.

Blending means saying the sounds one after another and pushing them together until they become a word. It is the step that turns knowing letter sounds into reading.

A worked example

s a t → ___

  1. Say each sound on its own: /s/ /a/ /t/.
  2. Say them again, stretched and joined with no gaps: "sssaaat".
  3. Say it fast. The word is sat.
  4. Write sat on the lines.

Answer: sat

The common mistake

What it looks like: Saying letter names ("ess, ay, tee") or adding "uh" to each sound ("suh, a, tuh"), which don't blend into a word.

Why it happens: Letter names are what children hear most, and stop sounds like /t/ are hard to say alone.

How to fix it: Use short, clipped sounds and hold the ones that can be stretched (/s/, /m/, /f/, the vowel). Start with words that begin with a stretchy sound, like sat and man.
