About this worksheet

/j/ is quick: the lips push forward and the tongue lets go, with the voice on. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.

An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /j/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: jam, jet, jog and jug. It's day 21 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.

A worked example

Read jam on the last line.

  1. Find jam on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
  2. Touch the dot and say /j/ once, quick, straight into the next sound.
  3. Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
  4. Keep sliding and hold /mmm/ to the end of the arrow.
  5. Say it again at talking speed: jam.

Answer: jam

The common mistake

What it looks like: Saying "juh", so jam comes out as "juh-am".

Why it happens: Like every stop sound, /j/ is too short to hold, and the "uh" fills the gap.

How to fix it: Say it straight into the vowel: /ja/, then jam. The dot is a reminder to say it once and move on.
