Letter B Sound: Stop and Blend

7 questions, one page, US Letter. Print it and do it on paper.

About this worksheet

/b/ is /p/ with the voice on: the lips press together and pop open. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.

An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /b/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: bat, bin, bus and bun. It's day 14 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.

A worked example

Read bat on the last line.

  1. Find bat on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
  2. Touch the dot and say /b/ once, quick, straight into the next sound.
  3. Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
  4. Touch the last dot and say /t/, crisp, then stop.
  5. Say it again at talking speed: bat.

Answer: bat

The common mistake

What it looks like: Mixing up b and d, so bat is read as "dat".

Why it happens: The letters are mirror images, and young children's eyes treat a flipped shape as the same shape.

How to fix it: Use the bed on the card: the word bed looks like a bed, with b as the headboard and d as the foot. The b comes first.
