About this worksheet
/p/ is a pop: the lips press together and burst open with a puff of air, no voice. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /p/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: nap, map, pin and pan. It's day 13 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read map on the last line.
- Find map on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /mmm/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
- Touch the last dot and say /p/, crisp, then stop.
- Say it again at talking speed: map.
Answer: map
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying "puh", so map comes out as "ma-puh".
Why it happens: A stop sound on its own is very short, and the "uh" makes it feel finished.
How to fix it: Hold a hand in front of the mouth: /p/ is one puff, and then it's over. Land on the dot and stop.
