About this worksheet
/v/ is /f/ with the voice on: top teeth on the bottom lip, and a buzz that tickles. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /v/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: van and vim. A worked example
Read van on the last line.
- Find van on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /vvv/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /nnn/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: van.
Answer: van
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying /f/ instead of /v/, so van is read as "fan".
Why it happens: /f/ and /v/ use the same mouth, and only the voice tells them apart.
How to fix it: Hand on the throat again: /fff/ is still, /vvv/ buzzes. Fan and van make a good pair to say back and forth.
