About this worksheet
/i/ is the short i in igloo: a small smile and a quick "ih". It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /i/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: fin, sin and rim. It's day 7 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read fin on the last line.
- Find fin on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /fff/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /i/ (as in igloo) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /nnn/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: fin.
Answer: fin
The common mistake
What it looks like: Mixing up /i/ and /e/, so fin is read as "fen".
Why it happens: The two vowels are said with almost the same mouth shape.
How to fix it: Say igloo and egg one after the other. /i/ is the smaller, tighter one, with a little smile.
