About this worksheet
/r/ is a growl: the tongue pulls back, the lips round a little, and the voice keeps going. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /r/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: ram and ran. It's day 3 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read ram on the last line.
- Find ram on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /rrr/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /mmm/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: ram.
Answer: ram
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying "er" or "ruh", so ram comes out as "er-am" or "ruh-am".
Why it happens: /r/ is one of the last sounds many children can say clearly, and the vowel creeps in to help.
How to fix it: Growl like a dog: /rrr/. Keep growling as the finger moves, then open into /a/. If /r/ is still hard to say, that's normal at this age; the reading is what this page practices.
