About this worksheet
/z/ is a buzz, like a bee: the same mouth as /s/, with the voice turned on. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /z/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: fen, fin, sin and rim. It's day 8 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read the line with z and i, one arrow each.
- Put a finger at the start of the arrow under z.
- Hold /zzz/ to the end of that arrow, with the buzz on.
- Move straight on to the next arrow and hold /i/ (as in igloo), with no gap.
- Say the two together, quicker: "zih".
Answer: "zih", said as one stretch of sound
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying /s/ instead of /z/.
Why it happens: The two sounds use exactly the same mouth; only the voice is different.
How to fix it: Put a hand on the throat. /sss/ is still; /zzz/ buzzes. Buzz all the way along the arrow.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
