About this worksheet
/l/ is sung: the tongue tip goes up behind the top teeth and the voice keeps going. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /l/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: elf. It's day 6 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read elf on the last line.
- Find elf on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /e/ (as in egg) without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /lll/ without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /fff/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: elf.
Answer: elf
The common mistake
What it looks like: Saying the letter name, "el", which puts an extra /e/ in every word.
Why it happens: "El" is how /l/ is said in the alphabet song, and it already starts with a vowel.
How to fix it: Start with the tongue already up and sing /lll/ with no sound before it. Then say elf slowly: /e/ /lll/ /fff/.
