About this worksheet
/n/ is a hum through the nose, with the tip of the tongue pressed up behind the top teeth. It's a sound you can hold for as long as your breath lasts, which makes it a good one for learning to blend: held sounds run into each other with no gap.
An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /n/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: an and man. It's day 2 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.
A worked example
Read man on the last line.
- Find man on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /mmm/ without a break.
- Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
- Keep sliding and hold /nnn/ to the end of the arrow.
- Say it again at talking speed: man.
Answer: man
The common mistake
What it looks like: Adding "uh" to the end: "nuh" instead of /nnn/.
Why it happens: Most children learn sounds one at a time, and the "uh" sneaks in when a sound has to stand on its own.
How to fix it: Hum it. Hold /nnn/ with the mouth closed and the tongue up, and slide straight into the next sound without letting it go.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
