Letter T Sound: Stop and Blend

7 questions, one page, US Letter. Print it and do it on paper.

On the sheet: Put your finger on the dot to say the sound. These sounds stop — try not to add an “uh” or an “a” after it. Say each sound crisply, then blend it with a sound you can hold. Check the box when the line is done 3 times.

About this worksheet

/t/ is a tap: the tongue tip taps behind the top teeth and lets out a puff of air, with no voice. It's a stop sound: it comes out in one quick burst and can't be stretched. Held, it turns into a sound with "uh" on the end, and that "uh" is what keeps sounds from blending into a word.

An arrow under a letter is a sound to hold for as long as the arrow runs; a dot is a sound to say once and stop. The page starts with /t/ on its own, joins it to sounds from earlier days, and ends on real words: at, mat, sat and rat. It's day 12 of the 100-day kindergarten phonics sequence BrightPage prints, with one new sound a day after the first.

A worked example

Read sat on the last line.

  1. Find sat on the last line and put a finger at the first mark under it.
  2. Slide along the arrow, holding /sss/ without a break.
  3. Slide along the arrow, holding /a/ (as in apple) without a break.
  4. Touch the last dot and say /t/, crisp, then stop.
  5. Say it again at talking speed: sat.

Answer: sat

The common mistake

What it looks like: Saying "tuh" instead of a crisp /t/.

Why it happens: /t/ can't be stretched, so children add "uh" to make it last long enough to hear.

How to fix it: Whisper it. A whispered /t/ is just the tap and the air, with nothing after it. Then say it straight into a vowel: /ta/.
