About this worksheet
A series is a list of three or more things in a sentence. Commas separate the items so a reader can tell where one ends and the next begins.
This worksheet uses a comma before the "and" at the end of the list too (the serial, or Oxford, comma), which keeps the last two items from running together.
A worked example
We packed apples oranges and pears.
- Find the list: apples, oranges, pears.
- Put a comma after each item except the last.
- Keep the and before the last item.
Answer: We packed apples, oranges, and pears.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Putting a comma before the first item or after the and: "We packed, apples, oranges, and, pears."
Why it happens: Children learn that a list needs commas, then add one wherever there is a pause.
How to fix it: Commas go only between the items. Read the list on its own (apples, oranges, and pears) and put commas only where one item ends and the next begins.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
