About this worksheet

Verbs that tell about the same time stay in the same tense. A sentence that starts in the past stays in the past.

A shift, like "She opens the door and looked outside", makes it unclear when things happened.

A worked example

We walked to the park and play on the swings.

  1. Find the verbs: walked and play.
  2. Walked is past tense and play is present, but both tell about the same trip.
  3. Change play to the past tense to match.

Answer: We walked to the park and played on the swings.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Changing the first verb instead of the one that is out of place, and creating a new mismatch with a time word like yesterday.

Why it happens: Either verb could be changed to match, so children pick the first one they see.

How to fix it: Look for a time word first (yesterday, every morning). It tells you which tense the whole sentence needs.
