About this worksheet

An introductory element is a word, phrase or clause that comes before the main part of a sentence: Yes, Finally, After the storm, When the bell rang. A comma follows it.

The introductory part can't stand on its own as a sentence. The part after the comma can.

A worked example

After the storm we swept the yard.

  1. Find where the main sentence starts: we swept the yard.
  2. After the storm comes before it and can't stand on its own.
  3. Put a comma after the introductory part.

Answer: After the storm, we swept the yard.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Putting the comma in the wrong place: "After the storm we, swept the yard."

Why it happens: A comma goes where you pause, and the pause in a long sentence can land in the wrong spot.

How to fix it: Find the part that can stand alone as a sentence. The comma goes just before it.
