About this worksheet
An interjection is a word that shows a sudden feeling, such as surprise, pain, excitement or agreement: wow, ouch, hooray, yes. It is set off from the rest of the sentence by a comma or an exclamation point.
An interjection can start a sentence, interrupt it, or finish it: The bus, alas, had already left.
A worked example
Hooray, our class sold every ticket to the spring play!
- Look for the word that shows a feeling and is set off by a comma or an exclamation point.
- Hooray shows excitement, and a comma sets it off.
Answer: Hooray
The common mistake
What it looks like: Underlining only interjections that start a sentence and missing ones in the middle or at the end.
Why it happens: Most examples put the interjection first, so children look only there.
How to fix it: Look for a word on its own between commas, or after a comma at the end, that shows a feeling.
