About this worksheet
Correlative conjunctions work in pairs: either … or, neither … nor, both … and, and not only … but also. Each pair joins two ideas of the same kind.
The words after each half should match. Both apples and pears is two nouns; not only sang but also danced is two verbs.
A worked example
___ Maya ___ Leo will present; both are ready.
- The sentence says both are ready, so it is about two people together.
- Two people together takes both … and.
Answer: Both Maya and Leo will present; both are ready.
The common mistake
What it looks like: Mixing the pairs: "Neither the cat or the dog came."
Why it happens: Or is far more common than nor, so it slips in after neither.
How to fix it: Learn the pairs as pairs: neither goes with nor, either goes with or.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
