About this worksheet
Some words don't spell the way they sound. Necessary has one c and two s's, definitely has no a, and receive puts the e before the i. This sheet has eight words like that: necessary, definitely, receive, occasion, government, environment, especially and knowledge.
Read, cover and spell is a three-step routine. Copy the word and split it into syllables, highlight the tricky letters, then fold the page and write it from memory.
A worked example
beautiful
- Read it and copy it into the center column.
- Split it into syllables: beau / ti / ful.
- Highlight the letters that don't sound the way you expect: "beau", which says "byoo".
- Fold the page, write the word from memory, then unfold it and check.
Answer: beautiful
The common mistake
What it looks like: Spelling government as "goverment".
Why it happens: In everyday speech the n is barely said.
How to fix it: Find the smaller word inside: govern + ment. Spelling the two parts keeps the n in.
Ten minutes a day, on paper. We plan what comes next.
