About this worksheet

A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymes at the ends of a poem's lines. The first line's last sound is A, and every line that rhymes with it is A too. The next new sound is B, then C.

This sheet has six four-line poems with different patterns: AABB, ABAB, AAAA and ABCB.

A worked example

The apples hang like little moons, / The wasps arrive on warm afternoons. / We fill the basket to the brim, / And carry autumn home with him.

  1. Line 1 ends in moons: A.
  2. Line 2 ends in afternoons, which rhymes with moons: A.
  3. Line 3 ends in brim, a new sound: B.
  4. Line 4 ends in him, which rhymes with brim: B.

Answer: AABB

The common mistake

What it looks like: Giving a line that doesn't rhyme with anything the same letter as the line before it.

Why it happens: It seems like the letters should go in order, A, A, B, B, whatever the sounds.

How to fix it: Give a new letter only to a new sound. A line that rhymes with an earlier line gets that line's letter, however far back it is.
