About this worksheet

A plural means more than one: foxes, butterflies, leaves. A possessive shows ownership with an apostrophe: the woman's voice, the teachers' desks.

Each sentence on this sheet has one plural or possessive written wrong, like "Three fox's crossed the field."

A worked example

The two girl's coats hung by the door.

  1. Two girls own the coats, so girls is plural.
  2. A plural that ends in s takes the apostrophe after the s.

Answer: The two girls' coats hung by the door.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Using an apostrophe to make a plural: "Three fox's crossed the field."

Why it happens: Plurals and possessives both often end in s, so the apostrophe looks like it belongs to both.

How to fix it: Ask whether something is owned. If not, there is no apostrophe: three foxes.
