About this worksheet

A perfect tense uses has, have, had or will have with the past participle: she has finished. It tells about an action that is complete at some point in time.

Present perfect (has finished) is complete now, past perfect (had finished) was complete before something else happened, and future perfect (will have finished) will be complete by a time still to come.

A worked example

she + finish (present perfect)

  1. Present perfect uses has or have. With she, it is has.
  2. Add the past participle of finish: finished.

Answer: She has finished.

The common mistake

What it looks like: Using the simple past form with have for an irregular verb: "They had ate."

Why it happens: For most verbs the simple past and the past participle are the same (finished, finished), so the irregular ones get the same treatment.

How to fix it: Say the verb's three forms aloud: eat, ate, eaten. The third one goes with has, have and had.
