About this worksheet
A unit fraction is one equal part of a whole: 1/2, 1/3, 1/8. The bottom number, the denominator, says how many equal parts the whole is cut into. The top number, the numerator, says how many of them we mean, which is always 1 here.
Unit fractions are where third grade starts with fractions, because every other fraction is built from them: 3/4 is three of the 1/4 parts.
A worked example
A bar is cut into 3 equal parts and 1 is shaded. What fraction is shaded?
- Count all the equal parts: 3. That is the denominator.
- Count the shaded parts: 1. That is the numerator.
- Write the numerator over the denominator.
Answer: 1/3
The common mistake
What it looks like: Writing the shaded parts over the unshaded parts: 1/2 for a bar with 1 of 3 parts shaded.
Why it happens: Children compare what they see, shaded against not shaded, instead of the part against the whole.
How to fix it: The denominator counts every part, shaded or not. Touch each part while counting so none is skipped.
