About this worksheet

A multiplication story always has equal groups: rows of plants, packs of juice boxes, children each holding the same number of stickers. The question asks for the total.

The skill is seeing the two numbers for what they are: how many groups, and how many in each group. Once a child can name them, the math is a fact they already know.

A worked example

A garden has 4 rows with 6 plants in each row. How many plants are there?

  1. How many groups? 4 rows.
  2. How many in each group? 6 plants.
  3. Multiply: 4 × 6 = 24.

Answer: 24 plants

The common mistake

What it looks like: Adding the two numbers in the story: 4 + 6 = 10 plants.

Why it happens: Children grab the numbers and use the operation they know best, without picturing the story.

How to fix it: Draw it: 4 rows of 6 dots. If the picture has equal groups, the answer is groups × number in each.
