About this worksheet
Rounding finds the friendly number a value is closest to. 762 is between 760 and 770, and closer to 760; it is between 700 and 800, and closer to 800.
The rule children use is to look one place to the right of the place they are rounding to: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down. Rounding the same number two ways shows that the answer depends on the place.
A worked example
Round 762 to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred.
- Nearest ten: look at the ones digit, 2. Less than 5, so round down to 760.
- Nearest hundred: look at the tens digit, 6. 5 or more, so round up to 800.
Answer: 760 and 800
The common mistake
What it looks like: Changing only the digit being rounded and keeping the rest: 762 to the nearest hundred written as 862 or 762.
Why it happens: The rule is taught as "look at the next digit", and children forget that every digit to the right becomes zero.
How to fix it: Name the two choices first (700 or 800?), then pick the closer one. The answer is always one of the two.
